SHANNON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Feb. 19. In the absence of the president (Mrs W. Snelling) the vice-president (Mrs W. H. McKenzie) presided over the February meeting; of the Shannon Women’* Institute, when there was a good attendance of members. With the full accord of the meeting it was resolved to forward the “institute quilt” to Dominion headquarters with tho suggestion that it form the nuoleus of a Dominion handicraft exhibition. Mesdames McLean • and Ingley were appointed delegates to attend the Wellington Federation annual meeting to be held in Palmerston •North early in April. It was decided to hold the annual picnic at Spencer’s Creek on Saturday, March 12, and all mombers were asked to bring their families and food. Nominations for the committee for the coming year were then received and further nominations will be received up till March 2. A “popular song” competition was won by Mrs Clarkson, and some impromptu charades were the cause of much amusement. An enjoyable afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Aim, Alexander, Burling, Bovis and Miss Aim. Members were reminded of the annual meeting next month and notified that the competition for that day would be for the “prettiest vase of flowers.” The singing of the National Anthem closed a successful meeting.
, f TENNIS. A friendly game of tennis between Shannon and Foxton clubs was played on the local courts oh Wednesday afternoon, Shannon winning by 14 sets and 126 games to 2 sets arid 69 games. Detail* are as follow, Shannon players being mentioned first:— Men’s singles.—Ostler beat Marton 9—2; Clayton beat Walsh 9—3; Alsop beat Anderson 9—4; Edginton lost to Ball 4—9. Ladies’ singles.—Mrs Croriquest beat Mr* Eruera 7—6; Mrs Marks beat Miss A. Moore 7—2; Mrs Pope beat Mrs M. Speirs 7—4; Miss Forbes beat Miss J. Stevenson 7—6. Men’* doubles.—Ostler and Clayton beat Martin and Walsh 9—4; Alsop and Edgington beat Anderson and Ball 9—B.
Ladies’ doubles.—Mrs Cronquest and Mrs Marks beat Mrs Eruera and Miss A. Moore 7—2; Mrs Pope and Miss Forbea beat Misses M. Speirs and Stevenson 7—2. Mixed doubles.—Ostler and Mrs Cronquest beat Martin and Mrs Eurera 9—2; Clayton and Mrs Marks beat Walsh and Miss A. Moore 9—4; Alsop and Mrs Pope lost to Anderson and Mis* M. Spiers B—9; Edginton and Miss Forbes lost to Ball and Miss J. Stevenson 9—3.
The committee of the local unemployed from funds in hand have purchased a. fat boast, half of' which is to be distributed from the relief depot this week and the remainder next week. Tho generosity and help of a local butchery firm made this arrangement possible. When cranking a Public Works lorry, Mr R. Roberts had the misfortune to injure his arm, necessitating medical attention.
