WOODVILLE, Feb. 18. Mrs P. B. Ackland, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs R. R. Johnston, Woodville, and Mr and Mrs B. D. D’Ath, at Kumeroa, tor some .weeks lett on her return to Auckland last evening. On Wednesday afternoon' there was a large gathering in Mrs A. H. Viles’a pretty garden, when the Woodville Women's Institute entertained their friends at a garden partjy, to celebrate the anniversary of their anniversary of their birthday, having now completed their seventh year. After the institute song, “Comrades and Friends," had been sung the president, Mrs W. H. Nixon, welcomed tho visitors, among whom were representatives from the Pahiatua, Mangatainoka, . Waipawa, Papatawa, Balance and Kumeroa institutes. Apologies tor absence were received from Miss Spencer (Kieeington), founder of tho New Zealand Women’s Institutes, Mrs J. D. C. Crewe (Pahiatua) and president of Wellington Provincial Federation Executive), Miss Grant (Palmerston North), and Mrs Westoby (Woodville). Happy speeches, con-veying-birthday greetings and good wishes on behalf of their respective institutes wero given by Mrs H. Paterson (Pahiatua), Mrs J. Bibby (Waipawa), Mrs C. Walker (Mangatainoka), Mrs E, Harding , Papatawa i, Mrs R. tt Austin (Federation Executive), Mrs B. H. Norman (Kumeroa), who was Woodville’o first Women’s Institute president,. and_ Mrs Horn, Ballance. A laughable play entitled, “Domestic Service Problems,” was well done by members of the Drama Circle, Mesdamee Arlidge, H. . P. Horne, and Jaine, and recitations were given by Meedames Jaine and Shearman. A very dainty tea was served, after which a beautiful birthday cake was cut by Mrs Nixon, assisted by Mrs J. S. Nelson. The cake, with its seven candles and decoration of little pink roses (tho institute flower), was the work of Mrs R. C. Leach. A hearty voto of thanks to Mr and hire A. H. Vile, for loan of their grounds, was carried by acclamation, accompanied by musical honours. A series of competitions arranged by Mesdames Hartridge, Halpin and Miss Kirkpatrick resulted as follows:—Putting, Miss Wilson; throwing the ping pong ball, Mrs Harding; miniature croquet, Mrs J. D. Wilson; gathering wool, Mrs G. Arlidge; hidden treasure, Mrs Fairley. Five rinks from the Dannevirke Club visited Woodville yesterday under . ideal conditions. The playing area was in splendid order, and this added to the success of the afternoon’s outing. The pace of the green was disconcerting to the visitors in tho initial stages; but once the majority found its strength some good bowling was witnessed. Dannevirke was successful in three wins out of five games, but owing to one of .the rinks failing badly against Pearson’s “barrage" the visitors lost on tho aggregate by 12 points. At the conclusion of play Mr C. F. Barker, president of the Dannevirke Club, extended to Woodville tho hearty appreciation of the visitors of tho kind hospitality extendod and to the ladies for dispensing a sumptuous afternoon tea. Mr A. Galbraith replied on behalf of Woodville, remarking that their club intende to send six rinks to Dannevirko on Wednesday ( March 2, and he was sure members oould look forward to a pleasant day. Results of . games were as follow, Dannevirke names being mentioned first: — Martin, Wood, Howartk, Calder (skip) 22, beat McLachlan, J. Morgan, Elder, Nicholas (skip) 18; Linton, P. C. Smith, Burkinshaw, J. Careton (skip) 7, lost to Grinlinton, R, Morgan, Galbraith, Pearson (skip) 34; Barker, S. Smith, ■ McKinnon, Gilbert (skip) 28, boat Bibby, Forbes, Henderson, Chimming (skip), 11; Currie, Gosling, Tyler, Tate re (skip) 26, beat Offwood, Tennent, Funke, Bly (skip) 18; Weavers, Brighton, Osborne, Greenwood (skip) 14, lost to Smith, Cotter, Skinner, Homo (skip) 28. Dannevirko 3 win’s, Woodville 2 wins. Points agregate; Dannevirke 87, Woodville 109.
