BAKERS’ CONFERENCE

DELEGATES' PLEASANT TIME. Following the conclusion of the business session yesterday, delegates attending the annual conference of the New Zealand Master Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Association in Palmerston North motored through the Manawatu Gorge to Balance bridge, where a very pleasant time was spent in the environs of the bush, and in swimming. With the conference concluding to-day, the social and, dance which had been arranged was held last evening in the Orange Hall, which was crowded. There was old-time and modern dancing, and cards were played. Dustin’s, Ltd., provided a splendid supper. Mr K. Cooper carried out the duties of M.C., and Mr A. Feeney played extra musio for dances. Songs were contributed by Mr T. N. Ross a Wellington baritone, who sang “The Deathless Army” and “Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind”; by Mr H. E. Fairey and a duet by Miss' R. Birch and Mr M. Birch (junior). The opportunity was taken by Mr J. S'. Jenkinson, on behalf of the Manawatu and Southern Hawke’s Bay Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Associations, to say farewell to the visitors. He expressed the hope that they would carry away pleasant memories of Palmerston North and that it would not be long before they were back again. Mr A. Laurenson, this year’s president of the Master Bakers’ and Pastry-., cooks’ Association, said he did not know how to thank the Manawatu Association for their hospitable entertainment. He had been particularly pleased to notice the way the Manawatu Association co-operated. Co-operation was the life of the association and without it little could be done. He hoped the Manawatu Association would have an era of prosperity through that cooperation. The speaker. felt that special mention should be made of the excellent work of Mr Jenkinson, nnd of the secretary, Mr S. I. McKenzie, in providing for their comfort. The ladies who had assisted were deserving of the highest appreciation, ho said, for the way they had entertained the visiting ladies. There had been many pleasant outings to Tiritea, Massey College and the Gorge Domain,' and the evening functions had been enjoyed to the full. On behalf of the delegates he thanked the Manawatu members one and all for their very pleasant entertainment. Dancing continued until midnight, the gathering terminating with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.
