CANADIAN RAILWAYS
WAGE REDUCTION PROPOSAL
EMPLOYEES’ PROTEST
VOTE TO BE TAKEN. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received December 4, 10.10 a.m. OTTAWA, Dec. 3. The Canadian railways have informed the Department of Labour that they are willing to conduct further negotiations with representatives of its employees with a view to making effective the report of the Conciliation .Board. As was expected, the report is accepted by the companies. Whether or not the negotiations may result in a compromise remains to be seen. The chairmen of the employees’ organisations have stated that they are unable to accept the Conciliation Board’s recommendations and have referred the question to a vote of the employees. Twenty-six thousand union members are involved.
Hon. James Murdoch, vice-president of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, states that the railway systems have advised the representatives of the running trades that a ten per cent, cut in wages will be made from November 15, and that a protest on behalf of the men has been made to the Labour Department.
Mr Murdoch declares that the railways’ action is illegal.
