A London cable message announces the death of Viscount Downe, aged 59. Flight-Lieutenant S. Burrell is arriving at Palmerston North this afternoon in a Bristol fighter ’plane from Christchurch.

Mr C. Browning, headmaster of the Waitara School, has been appointed headmaster of the new Waiwetu School, Lower Hutt.

Mr W. G. Rutherfurd, secretary of the local Returned Soldiers’ Association, is at present confined to his home with influenza. Mr H. E. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, left Wellington last night for Nelson, where he will address a public meeting to-night.

Squadron-Leader T. M. Wilkes, Director of Air Services, is a visitor to Palmerston North and will act as judge of flying competitions to-morrow.

Mr V. Goldfinch, who has been seriously ill with pneumonia, has now taken a definite turn for the better. His many friends will wish him a speedy recovery to a full measure of health. Mr C. J. B. Norwood, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, and Mr M. Marks of the Wellington Fire Board, are duo back in Wellington from England during Christmas week. The resignation of Mr W. J. Holdsworth as a member of the Local Government Loans Board was gazetted last night. Mr Holdsworth was a candidate for ltoskill at Wednesday’s election.

The death occurred suddenly yesterday, on the St. Kilda Bowling Club’s green at Dunedin, of Mr Walter Wyatt, aged 60, a well-known Dunedin bowler, Mr Wyatt was for many years pror prietor of the Bowling Green hotel. He retired a few years ago.

Mr and Mrs G. D. Goodwin will be flying to this city to-morrow from Wellington and Mr and Mrs Iv. Holdaway from New Plymouth. Captain Gibbons and Mr Keith will arrive by air from Hawera. Mr H. Armstrong will arrive to-morrow in his ’piano from Akitio.

Rev. R. H. Trill, 8.A., who has been vicar of Kaitaia for the last three years, has been apointed vicar of Takapuna, in succession to Rev. W. G. Monckton, who will retire at the end of this year. Mr Trill was formerly at Te Awamutu. He is expected to take over his new duties about the beginning of February, 1932. Mr G. G. Johnson, who was postmaster at Ashhurst in 1912-13, was an interested spectator at yesterday’s annual flower show conducted by. St. Mary’s Anglican Church at Ashhurst for it was largely due to his work that the annual effort was inaugurated 19 years ago. Mr Johnson was transferred front Ashhurst to Kaikoura in 1913 and retired from the service in 1921. Following a period which he spent farming in the north, Mr Johnson recently took up his residence in Palmerston North.

The following changes in the personnel of the Defence Force Staff are gazetted:—Captain It. C. C. Steele relinquishes his appointment on the General Staff at General Headquarters on proceeding to the Staff College at Camberley. Major W. G. Stevens is appointed to succeed Captain Steele in addition to his present appointment of Officer Commanding G.H.Q. Training Depot at Trentham camp, and he relinquishes his appointment as Officer Commanding the New Zealand Artillery, Central Command. Captain G. B. Parkinson has been appointed to succeed Captain Stevens in charge of the Central Command Artillery.
