MISHAP AT DARWIN.

DAMAGE TO THE SOUTHERN STAR

DARWIN, Dec. 2 V 111-fortune still dogs the AustraliaLondon air mail. _ Air Commodore Kingsford Smith had a narrow escape from serious accident when landing at Darwin aerodrome at 1.40 to-day. Heavy clouds, thunder, lightning and steady rain made visibility bad. Flying low for a landing, the Southern Star struck a telegraph pole at the lower end of the aerodrome, tore the fabric of one wing, broke a rocker arm on one cylinder of the starboard engine and dented a propeller. The other engines were not damaged, though part of a telegraph wire caught on the port engine. The ground engineer is hopeful that repairs will be effected to allow a resumption of the journey to-morrow. Kingsford Smith says that the trip was uneventful, though very hot. The latter part was through heavy rainstorms.
