BOXING CONTEST.
ABRUPT TERMINATION
Per Press Association
AVELLINGTON, Aug. 20. A professional boxing contest for the welter-weight championship of the Dominion was staged to-night between Ted Alorgan, of Wellington (lOst 6Jlb) and Reg. Trowern, of Auckland. It had an abrupt termination in the second round, when the referee, Earl Stewart, rushed and hoisted Alorgan’s right hand in token of victory. Trowern scored well with his right. Half-way through the second round Morgan landed a left hook, which caught Trowern fairly on the point, and he followed this. up with a left jolt to tho jaw, which further rattled the Aucklander. Trowern, keeping his head, hung on like a limpet and defied all Morgan’s efforts to shake him off. With only five seconds to go, to the surprise of everyone, the referee hoisted Morgan’s right hand. Trowern at once commenced to prance round the ring with both gloves raised to signify that he was anxious and willing to continue. The moderate sized house demonstrated against what they considered was an over-hasty act on the referee’s part in stopping at such an early stage what promised to bo an exciting contest.
