FUTURE OF TASMAN SERVICE. SYDNEY, Aug. 19. - The Sun says that co-operation between the New Zealand and Australian maritime unions in combating any development in the Pacific to the detriment of the unions is likely as a result of the entry of the Matson liners in trans-Tasman traffic. Consequently, it is likely that the New Zealand unions will send a representative to Australia to formulate a programme. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE COMMENT. WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. A protest against the unfair trading of American ships in New Zealand waters was decided upon by the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce at its meeting. This decision was brought about by a letter in which the writer inquired whether the chamber had taken any steps to resist the invasion of these waters by American trading ships, and pointing out that America did not permit the ships of other nations to trade on her coasts, or between her colonies and the mam land. These steamers would enjoy a subsidy from their Government of 10 dollars a mile or nearly £16,000 a trip, or £270,000 annually. Our ships had been driven off their coasts by legislation, and we should, lie urged, resist the attempted invasion of our shores, especially under the grossly unfair conditions of the competition with our own ships. Captain S. Holm stated that America had decreed that no foreign ship could trade from one American port to another. Australia had prohibited foreign coastwise trading. Ho suggested that New Zealand should get in touch with the Australian Government on this matter. . „ , Mr Stronach Paterson said that the Associated Chambers of Commerce had arranged to interview the Prime Minister on the subject.
