MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

REMAND UNTIL MONDAY. Messrs A. J. Graham and D. J. Lovelock, J.P.’s, presided over the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North this morning. Thomas Tarpy, a mechanic, aged 37, was charged that on August 19, with intent to defraud, by means of a certain false pretence —a valueless cheque for £7 10s drawn on the Union Bank of Australia —he did attempt to obtain £7 10s from Frederick Joseph Swindell. Accused was also charged with resisting Constable Barrett in the execution of his duty. Detective Russell applied for a remand until Monday, stating that nothing was known about accused. The remand was granted. CHARGES OF THEFT. Douglas Horace Hopewell, a mechanic, aged 22, was charged with the theft at Palmerston North on May 15 of tools and bicycle parts valued at £4 10s, the property of G. S. Thompson. He was further charged with the theft on or about February 2 at Napier of motor parts valued at £29 3s Od, the property of J. C. B. Etheridge. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse said that accused had been employed for some time by Mr Thompson, who had missed a large quantity of cycle parts. Certain cycle parts had been found in accused’s pos.«Tssion, and be had admitted taking parts to the value of £4 10s. During the recent earthquake at Napier, goods belonging to Mr Etheridge had been placed outside to avoid the fire, and it was alleged that accused had pillaged without authority goods valued at £29 3s 6d. Mr McGregor, who appeared for accused, said the latter had seen others helping themselves at Napier and had done likewise. He had not attempted to sell the goods. Accused denied taking more goods from his employer than were valued at £4 10s. He was 22 years of age and had not been in trouble before, and counsel suggested that a term of probation might meet the case.

The Bench said the seriousness of the offence from the public point of view was realised, but accused would be admitted to twelve months’ probation. An application for the suppression of accused’s name was refused, and an order was made for the return of the goods. REMANDED TILL TO-MORROW. Lewis I'aul, a haker and labourer, aged 69, was charged with being deemed an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient lawful visible means of support. He pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse said accused had been found in an empty house on Boundary Road. He had been living there for three weeks and subsisting on what people gave him, although he had 17s when arrested. Accused was remanded to appear again to-morrow.
