CHARLIE CHAPLIN

WITNESSES A BULL FIGHT. Sitting in the front row of the San Sebastian bull-ring, Mr Charles Chaplin, tire- film star, saw eight bulls killed in a thrilling fight. Thousands of spectators saw him shrink as a bull rushed a picador’s horse. Mr Chaplin put his hands to his ears as though to ward off the resounding thuds. He tried to escape unnoticed, but ho was soon the centre of a surging throng. When asked whether lie enjoyed the fight, Mr Chaplin replied: “I would rather say nothing.” With traditional courtliness, four matadors presented Charlie Chaplin with a dead bull after the fight, which Mr Chaplin described as a virile and moving spectacle. He was deeply touched, and produced a silver cigarette case and offered it to the matadors. He promised to attend another bullfight.
