ACCOUNTANT ACQUITTED.

Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 19. Charged with making a false declaration that he had personally audited the trust account of H. J. M. Thompson, solicitor, who had been sentenced for the theft of £BOOO of his clients’ money, Lawrence M. M. Monteath, public accountant, was acquitted by a jilry to-day. It had been stated in defence that Monteath had relied on another accountant for a certain amount of the audit work. Mr Justice Blair, in summing up, said it might be accepted that an auditor had to have a certain amount of assistance. The > mere fact ’.hat an auditor used a certain amount of assistance would not make it untrue for him to say that ho hod personally conducted an audit, but the question arose whether the amount of assistance Monteath .received was such as to make it someone else’s audit. Apparently all Monteath did was to scrutinise the balances. A verdict of not guilty was returned. The jury were out for three hours.
