HEALTH OF MAORIS.
CONDITIONS IN FRANKLIN DISTRICT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 19. The Health Department’s inspector is of the opinion that 75 per cent, of the Maoris in the Franklin district have tuberculosis owing to the conditions under which they are living, said Mr Parvin, the Franklin representative, at an Auckland Hospital Board meeting. He added that the living conditions of the Franklin Maoris were equally as bad as those at Mangere (reported yesterday). In one shed, Bft. by 10ft., built of kerosene cases, eight persons were living. They pay a rent of 2s 6d. A few days ago a baby was born there, he said. . ~, . , Mr Wallace, chairman of the board, said that six Maori tuberculosis cases from Franklin had been sent to the hospital and he believed that there were many more that were not receiving proper attention. Special i>rovision should be made by the Native Department for indigent Maori hospital C& Dr! Hughes, medical officer of health, said the conditions in the Franklin district were a good deal worse than those at Mangere.
