RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) R. Beale will ride High Gear, Oriflamb and Storm Raid in their jumping engagements at the Grand National meeting. Of the Awapuni trainers, L. Knapp emerged from the past season in fourth position on the Dominion list. Mrs McDonald being eighth and G. W. New ninth, their successes numbering 23, 19 and 18 respectively. H. Gray’s position on the jockey's championship table was never in doubt, while L. J. Ellis managed to retain his position as runner-up despite being out of the game for some time past ns the result of an accident. A. E. Ellis, brother of L. J. Ellis, ranked third on the jockey’s championship with the Palmerston North young rider, K. Voitre, live points removed and one point in advance of the Marton horseman, B. 11. Morris. T. Green, who topped the apprentices’ list for the Dominion in his younger riding days, occupied seventh position at the close of last season, with another Palmerstonian in R. Reed, who is at

present in Australia, one point removed. The local apprentice, «W. Broughton, experienced a good season in the saddle, this young rider registering 24 successes. S. Anderson was next of the local contingent with 16 winning rides, while Alan McDonald saluted the judge 11 times, the big majority of the wins being secured in jumping events. At Kensington last week, the second division of tho 14.2 handicap, five and a half furlongs, was won by the New Zea-land-bred Little Queen (Birkdalo—Pretty Girl).

The latest addition J. T. Jamieson’s active team at Takanini is Pompous. Ho is a three-year-old by Pombal from Leta, thus a half-brother to the brilliant Thespian, and, like that horse, he has a splendid conformation. Peter Jackson, winner of two juvenile events last season, is reported to be shaping well in his work at Hawera and is expected to develop into a really good three-year-old. The son of Nigger Minstrel and Left is a good type of gal‘lopor. Ganpat, who recently joined J. T. Jamieson’s stable, has been nominated for the Sylvia Park Handicap at the Pakuraaiga Hunt meeting at Ellerslie this month. Ganpat is a four-year-old gelding by Lord Quex from Queen Lizzie, tho dam of Gesto and Tioga, and won two events last season —the Juvenile Handicap, five furlongs, at Waipukurau, and the Mataliro Handicap, six furlongs, at Hawke’s Bay. He is owned by Mr J. S. McLeod.

It is more than likely that Karangapai will be given his first run this season in one of the flat races at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Karangapai has been making good progress under the care of G. Holland and although he has not attempted much fast work on account of the unfavourable conditions, he is rounding into shape nicely. Showing the weakness of tho maiden platers about tho Sydney racecourses at present,- Wild Time, one of J. T. Jamieson’s cast-offs,* scored at Canterbury Park last Saturday week. Only 14.3 and burdened with 8.7, she hopped out first, leading all the way to win easily. She is owned by W. Guest, a brother of Simba’s owner. As Wild Time is trained by G. Young and wae ridden by M. McCarten, ■ there was a decided Dominion flavour about the result.

Lucky Alice has shown consistent form during hor last five outings, for,' after running third in tho Puketaha and Rangiriri High-weight Handicaps at the Waikato autumn meeting, she won the principal sprint .each day at tho Te Kuiti meeting at To Awamutu, and finished third to Little Doubt and Standfast in the Winter Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Tc Rapa last month. Lucky Alice claims an engagement in the Dunedin Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting this month. The final gallop of tho Winter Cup favourite, Knollinere, before leaving for Riccarton, was performed on Tuesday

morning, the Grandcourt gelding covering six furlongs on the outside of the course proper in Imin 20sec. He was accompanied from the three-furlong peg by All Humbug, and came home at the finish in good style. The going was not quite so holding as it has been, but tho time recorded was really pleasing. Rational 11., who showed good form at tho Otaki meeting in June, when ho ran second to Mahora in the principal event on the second day, is to fulfil his engagement in the Winter Cup and will be ridden by K. Voitre. His best effort to date was his success in the Douro Cup at Trenthum two seasons ago, but he has little to his credit since then. Rational 11. is an Australian-bred gelding by Rossendalo from Sundream, and races in the same ownership as Conjurer 11. The Awapum-trained mare, Blue Paper, who left for Riccarton yesterday, was accorded entries in tho Woolston Handicap on the second day, and the Longbeach Handicap on the third day—two hack events. However, Blue Paper has won her wuv out of hack classes and is therefore ineligible to start. In tho 1929-30 season she accounted for the second division of tho Tiratu Stakes at tho Dannevirke spring meeting worth £SO to the winner, the Kaitoke Handicap at Trentham, value £2OO to tho winner, and tho Purau Hnck Handicap at Wanganui, worth £l5O to the winner. This makes a total of £355 for that season. During the past season Blue Paper won tho Kawau Handicap at Manawatu, worth £l6O to the winner, and the Glengarry Handicap at Dannevirke, worth £9O, which brings her place money up to £605. However, she figures in the open six on the second day—the August Handicap.
