Received July 24, 9.25 a.m. PORTSMOUTH, July 23. At Portsmouth the New Zealand cricketers continued their match against . the Combined Services in glorious sum- • mer weather. The wicket was easy. New Zealand scored 364 in the first . innings. When stumps were drawn for . the day Portsmouth had made 29 with- ; out loss. James and Kerr batted soundly on resumption. The former was the more aggressive and 98 was put ou for the first wicket. Due chiefly to a fine innings byLowry, the New Zealand cricketers gained a first innings lead of 63, although there were visions of a collapse after lunch. Kerr’s sound innings end--1 ed when he was howled off his pads. He showed a wider variety of shots than he had previously employed during the tour. He batted 140 minutes and hit eleven fours. Vivian was stumped when attempt- . ing a big hit. We a a shots were responsible for the dismissal of Blunt and Page, the latter lashing out at a ball well outside his off stump and was caught in the slips. Weir offered a sound resistance and batted for 67 minutes. He was bowled by a ball which nipped in quickly Cromb was caught at square leg and eight wickets were down for 280. After an uncertain start, Lowry attacked the bowling with vigour and determination and, assisted by Allcott’s rock-like defence, New Zealand gained the lead before Lowry- was run out owing to a misunderstanding in calling. He had appeared to be set for his century. He batted 85 minutes and hit eleven fours. His powerful shots through cover were a feature of his innings. Allcott and Matheson scored quickly, putting on 42 runs for the last wicket. Wilkinson and Shaw batted for half an hour for United Services before stumps were drawn.
