GIFT SCHEMES.
MEASURE FOR ABOLITION. CASH DISCOUNTS EXCEPTED. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, July 24. All gift schemes,, with the exception of cash discounts, will be prohibited by the redrafted trading Trading Coupons Bill, according to a statement made to-day by Hon.’ de la Perreile. The Minister indicated that the measure would go much further than the bill introduced during the brief session and contain a more extended provision with the view to prohibiting all gift schemes, whether coupon schemes or otherwise. Time, of course, would be allowed for the winding up of the gift schemes in existence. No restrictions would be placed on the present system of casli discounts which enabled traders to give a small discount in respect of each small purchase, the purchaser spending total of such discounts in whatever way he or she desired. The Minister said that he expected to receive the redrafted measure from the law draftsman early next week, and it was probable that the bill would make its appearance in the House on Wednesday next. From the expressions of opinion that had reached him, it seemed that the measure would be generally welcomed and that it would have a speedv passage through the House. Unless Parliament so directed, the Bill would not be referred to a select committee.
