Colonel F. Symon C.M.G., D.S.Ch, officer commanding the Central tary Command, is paying nis visit of inspection to Taranaki. Mr A. J. McPherson, town clerk of Eltham, has received a serious injury to his eye as the result small particle of steel becoming bedded in it. Mr John Moore, who passed away a few days ago, aged 80 years, was well-known resident of Wanganui, ing for many years a commercial traveller and an active member ot t Wanganui Gun Club. f Mr L. R. Bryant, of Nelson, and formerly a well-known resident ° Palmerston North, visited this centre to-day as the oldest member of ttr United Manawatu Lodge, E.C., to unveil a tablet at the consecration oi the new Masonic temple in commemoration of the ceremony. Mr M. C. Franklin, of the staff of Lincoln Agricultural College, will leave shortly to continue his studies at Cambridge University. Mr Franklin has been awarded a post-graduate scholarship in science, and will work under Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins at the William Dunne Institute of Bio-Chem-istry, where he proposes to spend two years. On his return to Lincoln College he will carry out research in pastures and their effect on health and thrift of stock.

Mr John Henry Towers, for many years’ custodian of the Levin saleyards, passed away at his residence at Weraroa, yesterday. Mr Towers was born at Cabourne, Lincolnshire, England, and came to New Zealand 53 y.ears ago. He was a wheelwright by trade, but later followed the occupation of a carpenter. He resided for some time in the Feilding district, but for a number of years before his death had been living in Levin. A widow and family of seven daughters and two sons, as well as a large number of grandchildren, are left to mourn their loss.
