SILVER COIN.
STATEMENT BY OPPOSITION LEADER. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 24. In the course of comment on the gazetted regulations with regard to the export and import of silver coin, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates said that silver coin was intended only for internal circulation, hut it was found that Imperial coinage was being sent to England, and the Dominion was being flooded with Australian, which was not legal tender here, for the purpose of avoiding the payment of exchange. This was one of the ways by which Australians were obtaining exchange on London through New Zealand with the consequent unwarranted pressure on the London-New Zealand exchange. In any case, the Government could not allow the currency of the Dominion to be tampered with in this way, which was contrary to the public interest and prejudiced our credit abroad.
