WINTER RACING

j MANAWATU : CLUB’S FIXTURE j -JUGGLE’S SURPRISE WIN .Although light showers were experienced at ii.terra. quite a pleasant car was experienced by patrons at the winter meeting of the Alanawatu Racing Club yesterday, but, a.s has been the experience of other c-lufcs, there was a sharp i drop in the totalisator returns, the sum of £BOB-5 10s being j handled as compared with £'11,465 for the opening cay last | year—a decrease of £3379 10s.

| FAVOURITES’ INDIFFERENT BUN. ! Backer* 'i fare, write* experienced at it I different innings, otiy three to: fatties ( prevailing. It the A vapor.: Steeplechase :i* i veteran Nukcmai vert from Ornet, and Dark j Prince, tee trio Laving ratieri Era;, aeotatt and third in the betting, while Landmark it the Rotgotea H jrdiea carried has hacked through after being indinerentlr placec three fuuongi from home. As in '.the caae cf Nakomai* vittorv. Adventn* premised • to be the winner of the RoaHne Handicap II half a mile from home, and the Biecgne gelding vat the third and iaet favourite tc ! score. Throughout the course of the day ther? ► were some exoeiient finishes, hut the gem ► ’proved to be the struggle between Wild ► ; Country, Cook and Roya: Black ir. the ► ! Broadway Handicap, toe trio being iockec ►! together ail the way up the straight. Tr.e | victory wen: to Wfld Country, but it a:.- . ; ed in between the other two home;, was . j the unlucky runner. | The day’s activities terminated wi-h the 1 Stewards’ Handicap when Juggle, who * ' j only seen on the racecourse at intervals. * 1 recorded an overdue win from Tar.eriri and | Arajean. but better placed at the turn for ► i home it looked as though Taneriri would ► have been much more aifEeulr to dir;o-ic ► j of. ► [ While the racing was to tally free of in- ► cider.ts which necessitated the judicial ccrni- ► rnittee being called together, two owners ► were fined for breaches of the rules, Mr ► and Mrs L. G. Poing-des-tre, the joint owners ► of .Sir Moment —a competitor in the K:wi- ► tea Hack and Hooters’ Hurdle*—being ►; fined £1 for racing in their incorrect c-01, , ours, and .Mr V,*. If. Following k the description of the race* ’ 1 decided after the firs: edition of the ■ ’.Standard” went to press yesterday.— I i rank outsider scores, ► 1 To ere were no scratchin gs in the Clifj ford Handicap, for which Little Doubt ■ we made a firm favourite from Mana- ; whemsa ar.d Merry Damon, L-lyn Du. tne winner, being the outsider of the field, i As they raced through the straight Little Doubt and Manawher.ua were ■ together ahead of Royal Opera and Pahu, the field - r/eing well bunched. Going a-.tav from ; home Roya! Opera ran forward to pilot Mensvrer.ua. Little Doubt and Merry Da- , mon into the back, but passing the five , furlongs post Llyn Du and Moutoa Tree.sury made forward moves, the order ! across the top being Manawhenua and Royal Opera from Moutoa. Treasury, L.'yn i Du, Royal Game ar.d Merry Damon, i Once in line for home Llyn Di ran up to Manawhenua and Royal Ojuera, and drew clear to win nicely by one and a- | half length* from Royal Opera, who was half a neck clear o: Manawhenua. Royal . Game was fourth, with Merry Damon, Little Doubt, Speariorm and pahu the order thereafter. FAVOURITE SUCCESSFUL. Gourmet, Unoco, Day Las* iipd Eveni ing Hero were the defection* from the ! Ror.gotea Hurdle Handicap, leaving a field of seven. Landmark was a good i favourite from Caliapat and Vi’ar Zone. ! Tne favourite carried hie backers through, I but the other pair failed to figure in j the p lac-in gs. Ca-lap>at and Chilamart i were the early leaders, but thei latter of i the pair gave way as they entered the ■ straight. The Warden running up to ! attend Caliapat, with Auctioneer and War Zone next. Going along the back | Caliapat was still in charge from The i Warden, but, passing the five furlong 1 post, Sp-earmisa, who had been purchased I to-day by Mr K. McK. ITuncan. moved : j up into third position ahead of Auction- i j eer and War Zone, rip-eannise was, how- I i ever, losing ground at her jumps, and ; War Zone deposed her a- they came 1 j across the top. Ca'lamart ar.d Landmark j here made forward moves, the favourite j corning from the back very fast and, j although Callarnart was the first over the | final fence, the former maintained, his | burst of speed to get up to win by o.ie 1 and a-ha!f lengths from Callarnart, with i Spearmi.es a length back. Auctioneer ■ was fourth, being followed home by The i Warden, Caliapat and War Zone. FAVOURITE AGAIN SCORES, j Trojan Melody was scratched for the ! Ruahirio Handicap. Advcntus arid Chief I Savage carne into favour, the pair being £l2O better fancied than Klwlfefs. Racing on to the course propc-r Patearoa and Potoaforrn were showing the way to Adventus, Chief Savage and Miss Chatter, Kissless being another 2 lengths backs. At the half-rnile post Potoaforrn gave way to Advcntus and the favourite arid Patearoa crossed the top together ahead of Chief Savage, Potoaforrn, Miss Chatter and Kissless. When the pressure was applied Patearoa compounded, Advcntus going to the front, and although Kiesless made an e ort to get up, the favourite was two lengths clear from Kissless at the past with Chief Savage a similar distance back. Patearoa waa fourth, wtih. Miss Chatter next. A GREAT FINISH. ; Cook wound up a £139 better favourite than Wild Country for the Broadway Hack Handicap v.ith Merry 'Melody preferred to Royal Black.* The finish was productive of an exciting battle all the way up the straight, Wild Country, Cook and Royal Black being together. The favourite was 1 probably unlucky to be caught between the other pair, and hi* rider could not produce the same spirited finishing effort, and he went down to defeat by the narrowest of margins. Cook via* the early leader from Wild Country and Shootist, Koval Black being in the rear. The last-named moved up to join Wild Country as they went along the hack with Shootist and Merry Melody together in behind. The field-closed on Cook approaching the entrance and, with heads straightened out for home, Wild Countryworked through on the rails, with Royal Black corning up to the.leader on the outside. The trio wore locked together the whole way up the straight, V ild Country getting the verdict by half a head with Royal Black a head back. There was a substantial gap to Merry Melody, with Shootist whipper-in. AN OVERDUE WIN. Coon Song, with A. E. Ellis in the saddle, carne in for surprising support for the Steward*’ Handicap—the final event for the day—and the Foxton repreeentafive wound up a £65 better favourite than Taneriri, with Royal Finance next in request. Maui and Manifesto were squeezed out at the start, Coon Song taking up the running from Great Charter and Arajeari, with Taranto and Blue Paper ahead of ! Jug'de. While Coon Song retained his position to the straight entrance, he was I always closely attended. Turning into i the straight Royal Finance attempted to ]
