TE ICAWAU SUB-UNION’S GAMES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) RONGOTEA, July 21. On Saturday the local junior team played tho Oroua Downs team on tho homo ground. Owing to tho recent phenomenal rains tho ground was in a very bad state and within a few minutes tho game was merely a mud scramble. In tho first spell R. Gloyn and F. Boswell scored tries for Rongotea neither being converted. In the second spell J. Wallor opened his team’s account with a try, making tho score: Rongotea 6. Oroua Downs 3. From another forward rush tho blacks again crossed tho line, A. Pedloy grounding the ball. Again tho attempt at goal was a failure owing to the conditions. Half-timo was called with tho scores standing: Rongotea 9, Oroua Downs 3. After the interval a battle royal between tho opposing vanguards took place, but the spell ended with tho scores unaltered. The final twenty minutes was in favour of the local lads who had a strong wind behind them and tries were notched by A. Pedley and R. Gloyn. No goals were registered throughout the game which thus ended in favour of the local team by 15 points to three. Tho junior competition leaders are Awahuri with 15 points. Rongotea and Oroua Downs are level with 10 points each, whilst Hui Mai have one point. Next Saturday Rongotea juniors travel to Awahuri. This match will be the first game in the last round and keen interest will await the result. . • Tho Rongotea senior team journeyed last Saturday to Oroua Downs and after a keenly contested game registered a pointless draw. The following lads played in tho team: Wyvern Hughes, Pat Corbett, Haydn Walker, Dick Corbett, Gordon Arnott, Ronald Hill, James Duke. They woro a very light team, but infused plenty of “pep” into their games, being defeated in the final by a very good combination from the Convent School by the narrow margin of 8-5 after defeating Ashhurst and Central A teams. There was an unusually largo and enthusiastic attendance at the Band of Hope on Thursday. The weather was very wet and stormy, but people were present from far and near, and tho Methodist Hall was filled to its utmost capacity. Rev. W. J. Berry was chairman and gave a stirring address on “Stickers.” A well prepared and most vailed programme was presented and with two company songs and appropriate choruses, the evening passed all too quickly. Mrs Yarrall presided at the organ. Befor i closing the chairman called for a show of hands from all who wished to have further meetings of tho Band of Hope, and it was unanimously decided to carry on.
