(From Our Own Correspondent). SHANNON, July 4. Somo weeks ago a meeting of interested parties was hold, to discuss the action of the Public Works Department in endeavouring to abandon the maintenance of the Otauru Stream, which is the tail-race of the Mangahao power house. The meeting resolved to make representations to the Minister of Public Works, that the department maintain the stream for all time. Mr J. Linklater, M.P., has arranged for a deputation to meet the Hon. E. A. Ransom in Wellington next Tuesday. Messrs W. Moynihan, K. Mitchell, S. W. Carter and representatives from the Shannon Borough Council, Horowhonua County Council and Makerua Drainage Board will comprise the deputation. With reference to the Shannon allotment scheme which was submitted to the Unemployment Board for consideration, the local Unemployment Committee has received a communication from the board regretting that the present state of the board’s finance precludes the putting into operation, such a schome at the present time, but when the opportunity offers further consideration will be given to the suggestions made, together with many others that have been submitted from time to time.

At tho monthly meeting of the School Committee on Wednesday ovening the Horowhenua Electric Power Board advised that they had reviewed the minimum charge on lighting in schools and churchos and had decided to offer these consumers an alternate rate of Is por unit for lighting, with a minimum of £1 por annum. On the schools’ present consumption this will mean a 50 per cent, reduction in lighting cost. The recommendation of the householders’ meeting that tho department be asked that the cost of school materials be reduced by 10 per cent, is to be forwarded to the Education Board. Tho headmaster (Mr J. L. Mark) reported that the average attendance for tho past four weeks was 296.8 with a roll number 320. Considering tho rough weather experienced, commented Mr Mark, the attendance was particularly good. Ho stated that minor accidonts at the school were continually occurring and as a result of the first aid box required i-cplenishing. It was resolved to have this matter attended to. Tho discussion on the formation of a Homo and Schools Association in Shannon was left over for a later meeting. Miss Hunter, nurse in charge of the local dental clinic, who has completed her duties in Shannon for the term, has left for Cambridge, where she will bo stationed for tho next two months. Tho usual fortnightjy euchre party was held under the auspices of the Croquet Club on Tuesday afternoon when Mrs Donghi was the winner of tho first prizo and Mrs Aim secured the second.
