RELIEF ENTERTAINMENT.
OVER £lO7 RAISED.
The effort by Mr F. Jackson and Palmerston Pictures, Ltd. of screening “The Desert Song” at the Regent Theatre last evening in aid of the local unemployment funds met with gratifying success and it will now be possible to hand over £lO7 for this laudable object. Included in the total returned is a percentage of the takings at the sweet stall conducted by Mr and Mrs W .0. Dudley. At a suitable juncture in the screening of the picture, the Mayor (Mr Mansford) took the opportunitl, on behalf of the Central Relief Committee, to thank Mr Jackson and the Palmerston Pictures, Ltd., for their valued assistance, the speaker commenting that the money would be particularly welcome. Last week, explained the Mayor, the Central Relief Committee had assisted 272 persons with families through the food depot, and over 400 with clothing, while firing had also been issued. There was, however, need for more sugar, rice, bread and tea, which had not, come to hand in sufficient quantities to meet the demands. Nevertheless, Palmerston North was now as well organised as any city in th 6 matter of relieving distress, thanks to the ready response made by citizens to the appeal made. However, without the help of the public the work of the relief committee would be distinctly limited, the speaker paying a tribute to the generous action of citizens. In conclusion, the Mayor also voiced appreciation of the efforts of Miss Woodfield and her orchestra for their services which had been given gratis, and to Mr Walters, New Zealand manager for First National Pictures Corporation, for the free screening of the picture.
