The friends of Mrs Harold Abraham, of Taranaki, will be interested (says an exchange) to hear that she has arrived safely in Boston, U.S.A., where her son, Richard, is in hospital. The engagement is announced of Daphne Grace, second daughter of W. J. Sexton, Glen Oroua, to Hecton William George, eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. W. Rivers, Oroua Downs.

At St. Paul’s Methodist Church yesterday, Rev. J.-E. Parsons referred to the passing of Mrs R. P. Edwards, who had been a staunch member of the congregation. Mr Parsons referred to the deceased lady’s love of the church and extended the sympathy of the congregation to the bereaved family.

SALVATION ARMY FUNERAL

Impressive services at the Salvation Army Citadel marked the final ''tributes to the late Ensign Bailey, whose interment took place at the Kelvin Grove cemetery yesterday afternoon. At- 2 p.m. a funeral service was conducted in the citadel by Colonel Swain, women’s social secretary for the Dominion. Hymns sung were “Nearer My God to Tlree,” “A Charge to Keex> Have I,” and “My Rest is in Heaven.” The songsterfs sang “Safe in the Arms of Jesus.” Mrs Ensign Bridge led the prayer, while the speakers were Mrs Major Gray and Mr Jackson, senr. • AVhen the casket was leaving the citadel it passed between the lines of the Life Saving Guards. The Salvation Army Band, augmented by Feilding bandsmen, led a long funeral cortege as far as Albert Street, and played “The Garland of Flowers.” At the graveside “Rock of Ages,” and “My Face is Turned to Tliee,” were sung. Ensign Bridge and Major Gray were the speakers, while the committal was performed by Adjutant Fraser (Feilding) and Colonel Swain. Major Gray sang a solo. In the evening there was a large attendance at the memorial service in the Citadel for the late Ensign Bailey.

GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL,

BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY

The Palmerston North Girls’ High School basketball and hockey teams visited Dannevirke on Saturday, and won the basketball match against the Girls’ High School, there by 15 goals

to seven. The Palmerston North side, however, were defeated at hockey, the first match of the season for the Bennett Cup by four goals to nil. The Dannevirke girls showed better combination, while the Palmerston North team included many new players.
