FOXTON
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, July 2, During the month of Juno rain fell locally on 15 days, a total 4.A7 inches being recorded. The maximum fall was 1.3 of an inch on tho 14th. The hottest day was the 13th, and the coldest days wero the 6th and 30th when tho thermometer registered 56 and 36 degrees spectively. As a result of the recent stormy weather seven trees fell over tho telegraph lines betwen Foxton and Sanson and have kept tho post and telegraph gangs busy during the week. Most of the trees which caused the trouble were bluegums. Work under tho No. 5 scheme in connection with tho widening of tho Main Drain which serves tho Moutoa and Whirokino districts, and which when completed will bo of immense benefit to tho areas and highway, has been hung up owing to unfav ourablo weather conditions and it is doubtful if tho work will bo completed this year. Until recently tho season has been particularly dry, so dry in fact that it was not until the recent heavy rains that the light sandy soil extending between Foxton and Oroua Downs received a proper soaking. The downpour has done an immense amount of good, on this class of country. As evidence of the dryness of the season until this mbnth, an artesian well in tho Moutoa ran dry some time ago. FOXT&N, July 3.

Hughes; secretary, Mr E. J. Murphy; treasurer, Mr S. H. Poole; auditor, Mr D. R. Ogilvy. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mr D. R. Ogilvy in the loss he had sustained by the death of his mother. Miss A. Speirs was elected a life member of tho society. Rev. W. H. Walton reported that he had made inquiries into a scheme in vogue in Wellington whereby an inter-society competition was held annually in connection with suburban shows. The various exhibitions were judged on various points and a trophy thus competed for. He had been desirous of introducing this schemo into tho district if possible, but had found that the rules obtaining in Wellington wero too cumbersomo for application on broader lines here. He suggested that a conference of Rongotea, Palmerston North, Bulls, Samson, Levin and Otaki representatives be held to discuss tho proposition and if agreed upon to set up local rules and regulations. It was decided that the secretary write’ the various societies and endeavour to arrange a conference.
