PAHIATUA
PAHIATUA, July 2. Mr and Mrs J. D. Thompson, of the Bank of New Zealand, aro spending their annual vacation with relativo3 in Napier and Blenheim. . Mr and Mrs F. Tattle, of Norfolk Island, who have been visiting relatives in Masterton and Pahiatua, have left on their return journey homo. Mies E. Murrell, of Main Road, is visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs J. Dick, Ngaturi, have returned from a trip to Wanganui and the Manawatu district. Miss Lloyd, who has been living with her sister, Mrs S. A. Rombach, for nearly two yean has booked her passago by tho lonic, which saile for Southampton on Saturday next. A party of Woodvillo firemen, and their wives, visited Pahiatua last evening to engage tho local brigade in a card tournament, nearly fifty sitting down to the tables in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Tho euchre tournament ended in victory for Pahiatua by 55 games to 41. Supper was provided bj T tho local brigade and an enjoyable evening spent. Tho Hamua Golf Club visited Pahiatua on Wednesday winning by six games to two.
Tho results of yesterday’s basketball matches are as-follow: Convent B (6) beat Mangatainoka (4). Convent A (14) beat Konini (4), Pahiatua (5) beat School (1). A very fast and open game was played on the Pahiatua Showgrounds yesterday afternoon between tho Athletic and Nireaha Rugby juniors. When theso teams met in the first round Nireaha proved too good, but yesterday there was only one team in it all through, Athletic winning out by 15 points to 3. On Tuosday, at Pahiatua, there was held tho monthly meeting of members of the Wairarapa Clerical Society. These _ meetings are held in the different districts to coincide usually with tho annual festivals of the Churches. The following clergymen were in attendance: Revs. G. V. Gerard (Pahiatua), E. J. Rich (Masterton), W. J. Durrad (Feathcrston), D. J. Davies (Greytown), G. Watson (Eketahuna), _ E. W. Burgin (Pongaroa), Kokcri Fatiana (Native minister for tho Wairarapa, wit'll a roving commission), W. F. Stent (Carterton) , and his assistant, Mr Mileon. The abovo ministers took part in Tuesday night’s festival service in St. Peter’s Church when an anthem was rendered by the choir. Tho service was conducted by Rev. W. F. Stent, and tho preacher was Rev. E. J. Rich.
