ARTILLERY PRACTICE.

PALMERSTON NORTH BATTERIES. On Saturday afternoon the 7th and Bth Batteries and the Boys’ High School Artillery section held their annual shoot at Manawatu Heads. Thero was a large attendance of Palmerston North and local residents to witness the practice. The batteries were located at the rear of the pilot stations, while the targets were situated 2000 yards out to sea, where they were placed the previous day by Lieutenant Joyce, R.N.Z.A. instructor in charge and adjutant to the Second Field Brigade, X.Z.A., • assisted by Captain Larsen (pilot). The shoot, which commenced at 2.30 p.in. consisted of eight series. The gun position officer for the batteiy was Liout. Coles and Lieut. Joyce was in command of the whole of the activities. The High School boys carried out their work with precision. The shooting generally was of an excellent character and a defence aeroplane overhead during the afternoon lent a sense of reality to the proceedings. The practico was made possible only by the batteries concerned defraying the whole of the expenses in conection therewith and in this connection they are very grateful for the generosity of certain Palmerston North carrying firms who gratuitously towed the guns to and from the scene of activity.
