YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND PRICES.

On the Wellington Stock exchange Government securities continuo in excellent demand, _ with scarcely any sellers, and tho quotations showed firmness yesterday. The 44 per cent, stocks 1939 and 1938, wero steady at £97 and tlio 5£ per cents 1933 and 1936, at £99, Tho 51 per cents, 1941, wero unchanged at £94 15s; and tho 51 per cent, bonds, 1937, at £96 5s showed a rise of ss. Debentures wero again in- demand. Auckland Harbour Board, 51 per cents., 1939, wero wanted at £94. Wanganui City, 5J per cent., 1944, at £97, and Tirnaru Harbour Board, 54 per cent., 1950, at £9l 10s. Wellington Gas debentures wero firm at £99. Thoro was a restricted demand for bank shares. National Bank of Now Zealand at £5 woro very' steady. National Bank of Australasia, £lO paid, were down 5s to £lO 15s, and tho £5 paid wero down at 3s at £5. Bank of New South Wales wero in demand at £26 10s with a sale reported at £27 ss. Bank o.f New Zealand were wanted at 50s, and tho long term wero unchanged at 265. New Zealand Investment Mortgage wero firm at 10s 3d cum. dividend. New Zealand Insurance were up 6d at 41s 6d, and South British Insurance wero 3d higher at 545. Australian Provincial Assurance were in demand at 4s with a salo reported at 4s 6d. Christchurch Gas were firm at 24s 6d. Gear Meat were steady at 295, and New Zealand Refrigerating, 10s paid, wero unchanged at 3s. Huddart, Parker, ordinary, wero wamted at 20s. Wellington Woollen preference wero up 6d at 90s 6d. Westport Coal wero stoady at 255; Kauri Timber at Bs, Leyland-O’Bricn Timber at 21s. New Zealand Breweries have dropped Is as compared with tho bids on Thursday, and wero in demand at 33s 9d. They were sold locally at 36s on Thursday. Tooth’s Brewery were wanted at 20s 6d with a sale at 20s lOd. Burns, Philp and Co. wero steady at 30s and British Tobacco at 29s 4d.
