PALMERSTON NORTH WOOL, SKIN, HIDE AND TALLOW SALE.
Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their monthly wool, skin, hide and tallow sale when tno usual Jarge catalogue was offered to a full and representative bench of buyers. Bidding was animated throughout the sale and’ a much firmer tone was evident. Wool: Although our catalogue consisted of chiefly bag wool, buyers were very keen to secure suitable lots at rates in excess of last sale. Sheepskins: Competition was exceptional and bidding brisk for dry skins and wo sold our catalogue at prices showing a rise of id per lb. Salted skins wore also keenly sought after, but the market for these showed no change from our previous report. Hides: Calfskins were general in competition at prices on a par with our last sale, as also were light cow hides. Medium and heavy cow and ox hides were firmer by -£d to id per lb. Tallow : Wo had an exceptionally largo entry of butchers’ tallow which met the market at an advanco of 6d to Is per cwt. The following are our realisations: —Wool: Southdown 5d to sid; crossbred, good, 3£d to 4id; crossbred, inf., 2£d to 2Jd; lambs, good, 4£d to 4£d; lambs, inferior, 2d to 3d; dead to 3d; bellies and pieces, Id to 2d. Skins; Dry, fine crossbred, 3£d to 4d; crossbred,' 3£d bo 3jd; i-£ wools, 2£d to 3id; shorts, 2£d to 2jjd; pelts, 2£d to 2£d; lambs to 3£d; dead, Id to 2d; damaged, lid to 2Jd. Salted: Quarter wools la Id to Is 3d; woolly pelts, lid; pelts, lid; lambs, 6d to 9d; damaged pelts, 4d to Bd. Hides: Calfskins, light Ist, B£d to B§d; 2nd, 7id to 7Jd; cut, 4£d to 6£d; slippy, to 4id; heavy, Ist, 6d to 6|d; 2nd, 4|d to 53d; cut, 3gd to 4£d. Cow: Light, 4d to 4£d; medium, 4£d to 4£d; heavy, 4£d to 4£d; cut, 3£d to 3gd. Ox: Light, 4£d to 4jjd; medium, to sd; heavy, s£d to s§d; cut, 4£d. Tallow: In tins, 103 6d to 12s; in drums and casks, 10s 6d to 13s. PRICE OF GOLD. LONDON, Feb. 18. The price of gold is £4 4s 10Jd per ounce.
