STRANGE DISCOVERY.
300-Y r EAR-OLD WATER CONDUIT
A hollowed tree-trunk, about Bft. long and a foot in diameter, which 300 years ago was used as a water conduit, was unearthed in the Strand, London, recently during excavation work at the entrance to Somerset House.
According to Strype, an authority on this subject, the Palace (old Somerset House) was greatly improved by Anne of Denmark, consort of James I. She brought a supply of water by pipes from Hyde Park, and it is possible that this relic was part of this system. Hollowed trunks were extensively used by the old New River Company.
