LAWN TENNIS.

PALMERSTON NORTH CLUB

There has been some interesting play of late in the ladder competition of the Palmerston North Club.

Brown, who started the season at No. 1, was soon deposed by D. I. Robertson, but in a return match recovered his place with a score of 6 —2, 3 —6, 6—2.

Robertson, who is a bit out of form just now, also went down to Boddy, who won at 6 —4, 4 —6, 6—3, and has now challenged Brown' for top place. There is little to choose between these two players, but it is probable that both will have to give way to one or two new members.

The top place among the ladies has also changed hands, Miss Haggitt having beaten Miss Astle and resumed the place which she occupied for a couple of years. The club is stronger all round than it has been for some years. Wheeler, of the Marton Club, who is well known in Palmerston North players, evidently played well at the Wanganui tournament, and with Gover, a Marton player who was for years the Poverty Bay champion, took the crack pair, Stedman and Noel Wilson, to five sets in the final of the doubles.

The Palmerston North open tournament begins next Monday. The new champion is sure to be playing and it is hoped that D. G. France will defend the title which he won last year.
