NEW LAWS FOR 1931.

LEGAL EXAMINATIONS. SOLE CONTROL~BY UNIVERSITY. Several Acts passed by Parliament last session will come into operation on Thursday. These include the Apprentices Amendment, Judicature Amendment, Law Practitioners Amendment and the New Zealand University Amendinent Acts. In the main the measures deal with technical questions. The Judicature Amendment Act transfers the functions of the judges in relation to the amendment of the rules of procedure to a rules committee, the membership of which, in addition to the judges, will include the Attorney-General and representatives of the legal profession. The main purpose of the Law Practitioners Amendment Act is tAjconfer on the University of New Zealand the sole control of the law examinations and the educational qualifications of candidates for admission as barristers and solicitors of the Supreme Court. The New Zealand University Amendment Act provides for the setting up of a council of legal education and empowers the Seriate to make statutes with respect to examinations in law and incidental matters. The Apprentices Amendment Act gives effect to some of the recommendations of the conference which considered the question in 1929.
