RESCUES FROM DROWNING.

NOTED SWIMMER ASSISTS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. Miss Gladys Pidgeon, the Empire Games swimmer, her brother, Ronald, aged 18, and Mr James Kempster, the English dirt track rider, played a part in rescuing two surf bathers from drowning at Muriwai Beach at midday yesterday. About thirty persons were bathing, including Robert Cameron and S. W. Barton, both aged 18, who were caught in a strong undertow and carried away. Cameron’s cries for help were heard by Miss Pidgeon who, with her brother, swam out. After a hard struggle they brought him back to shallow water, where others assisted with a chain of hands. At this moment it was noticed that Barton was also in trouble. Mr Kempster swam out and rescued him in eumilar fashion. -i.'.j Both Cameron and Barton completely exhausted but soon i-re-covered. ~ “I did not think we would ever get ashore,” said Miss Pidgeon. “Fortunately, Cameron kept his head and did not struggle. It was lucky there was someone else there to help Barton.”

Miss Pidgeon was formerly a resident of Palmerston North.

BATHERS IN DIFFICULTIES.

Ten rescues from drowning were effected by lifesavers on v Taranaki beaches yesterday and to-day. , Seven of the rescues were effected at Fitzroy beach, New Plymouth, by the beach patrol' swimmers getting into difficulties in the surf. Four men from Oka o were caught in the undertow at Oakura. One C. V ooldndge, is still very exhausted. Extremely hot weather during the past-few days has enticed crowds to the beaches.
