Young, Vicar of Ha we ra, and an old Palmerstoman, will be the preacher at 11 a.m. and 7 P-m . in All Saints’ Church to-morrow. Mr Young has been attending the Student Christian Movement Conference at l eliding. Mr William Cronin, formerly in charge of the Opera House in Palmerston North and for some years past a resident of Sydney, has been appointed Victorian manager of KKU Pictures, Ltd., his head quarters being in Melbourne. A Maori AVar veteran, Mr Charles Peafell, passed away on New Year s Eve at Wanganui. 'The late Mr Peafell took part in the fighting in many parts of the North Island. He settled in AVanganui 25 years ago and was 84 years old at the time of his death. Dr. and Mrs J. Bartholomew, of San Francisco, are at present visiting Dr. Bartholomew’s parents Mr and Mrs Geo. Bartholomew, of Feilding. Dr Bartholomew, who holds the rank oi Lieutenant-Colonel in the United States Army Medical Corps, will return with Mrs Bartholomew to San Francisco about March.

The following telegram has been sent by His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral to Lord Rutherford, the renowned New Zealand scientist, on the occasion of his elevation to the Peerage: “Heartiest congratulations on your well-merited honour. New Zealand delighted at this recognition of her distinguished son.—^ledisloe.” The death has occurred of Mr Henry Brownlee, who was born at Gate Pa, Tauranga, on September 19, 1865. The deceased was one of the oldest experienced miners in the Thames, lie managed several mines in the early days, and was a prominent member ot the Thames Naval Volunteers. He was one of the founders of the Thames Rugby Union City Football Club. He represented Thames and Auckland. Mr J. S. AVatt, of Auckland, who was selected as one of the two Rhodes Scholars for 1931, left Wellington by the Remeura for England. He will take up his studies at Oxford. The selection was made early in December and under ordinary conditions he should have left for England next September. As he has been able to take up senior work he has been allowed to proceed with his studies at once The other Rhodes Scholar, Mr J. E. Lovelock, of Otago University, will go to England in September.

The death has occurred of Mr Angus Sinclair, one of the earliest or the Wairarapa settlers and a well-known figure in racing circles throughout the AVellington province. The late Mr Sinclair was 76 years of age. He came out from Scotland with his parents at the age of five. The family travelled along the beach at Palliser Bay and struck inland to Burnside, Lower V alley, where they established their home. Mr Sinclair remained at Burnside almost all his life. He was a very keen sport and was considered one of the best judges cf horses in the province. His knowledge of pedigrees extended back over the past 50 years. He saw much of the early Maoris of the Wairarapa and was re : cognised as one of the best Maori linguists in the district. He never married.
