WOOL SALES

BUYING WELL SPREAD AT WELLINGTON. CONTINENTAL COMPETITION PRONOUNCED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. At the local wool sales to-day, a catalogue of a little over 17,000 bales were offered, and competition on the current low range was exceedingly animated, with buying well spread, and better spread than that at Auckland and Wanganui. Continental competition was most pronounced, as a large proportion of the offering was suitable for that trade. Bradford was interested, and any lines of good to superfine crossbreds met with excellent competition. These wools were fully firm at the Napier prices, and slightly better than those for Auckland and Wanganui. Good skirtings sold freely, Germany being the principal operator. Merinos and halfbred prices were on a low level. The highest price for Merino was lOd for eight bales of A Merino ewes, and 9ld for A Merino wether.s. made 10}d, and a second line 9id, made 10Jd ,and a second line 9Jd, with pieces and bellies of the same clip 7d. Ordinary topmaking lines of halfbred and Merino sold at disappointing prices, and passings were fairly heavy. The quality and condition of the wool at the sale was below the usual standard. Withdrawals before the sale were fairly heavy. Superfine crossbreds of American style were eagerly competed for, the prices running from 6d to 7d. Good parcels of lambs brought 5d to 6d. Ordinary topmaking 44-48’s crossbreds showed no change and brought 4Jd to ssd. Low grade crossbreds 4d to 4sd, inefior and seedy wools 3d to 3}d, ordinary bellies and pieces 2d to 3d, with better lines 4d to 4jd. There was a full bench of buyers keen to get wool.
