SANCTION AWAITED.
With the object of expediting matters relating to the Palmerston North unemployment loan of £2OOO for relief work at Tiritea, the City Council last evening passed a motion confirming the special order. The Mayor, who moved the resolution, said that ho had received advice that objections to the loan were being considered to-day (Tuesday) bv the Local Bodies’ Loans Board. It was these objections that were holding up the loan, as he understood the board took special care in considering a loan such as this, which had not been authorised bv a poll of the ratepayers. He was hopeful of receiving advice on Wednesday that the loan had been approved. , , , “I will be very pleased when we get the sanction,” said the Mayor. “The unemployment position has become very acute in Palmerston North. It was most painful for me last week not to be able to offer the men work. Some of them came to my office quite depressed and went away disappointed. I feel that if this loan is sanctioned the council will have done a noble thing.”
