EXPENDITURE OPPOSED.

FENCE ROUND PLAYGROUND

A protest was lodged by Cr. Eliott at the meeting of the Palmerston North City Council last evening against the expenditure of £SB in providing a twenty foot wire fence round the Campbell Street playing area to prevent balls used by children falling into the backyards of adjoining property. Cr. Eliott maintained that the expenditure was unwarranted and was sheer waste of money. He wished his protest recorded. Cr. Guy: I agree with Cr. Eliott. The Mayor: It was absolutely necessary. to give some protection. The matter was authorised by the council. The city curator (Mr P. Black) stated that complaints had been received of broken windows in adjoining houses and actions for damage had been threatened. Cr. Eliott said he could not see how the council could be held responsible for the actions of children at play. He protested that the expenditure was merely frittering away money. The fence having already been erected, no action was taken by the council.
