BULB SHOW (From Our Own Correspondent). MARTON, Sept. 18. The 28th annual bulb and spring flower show of St. Stephen’s Church was opened by Mr Edward Newman, in the Civic Theatre this afternoon. Referring to the show Mr Newman said that what impressed him most was the splendid spirit shown in producing the beautiful exhibition of flowers. He congratulated those concerned and added that while something like £350 had been raised last year, ho hoped that £SOO would reward the committee’s efforts at the present function. A record number was present this afternoon, and a good crowd assembled in the evening. The usual musical items and playette rendered at past bulb shows were eliminated, small “talkie” films shown by courtesy of Williamson’s, Ltd., taking their place. All the stalls did a brisk business, likewise the supper room, and the honorary secretary (Mr Alan Gibson), reports a satisfactory first-day’s iakugs. Points prizes were won as follow: Decorative, Mrs W. Faulding; amateur, Mr Arthur Brewster, who also won Mr Henry Galpin’s silver vase for the champion bloom; amateur sub-section, Rev. Mr Kendon (Sandon); local growers, Mrs A. Honeyman, along with Mrs Duncan Simpson’s silver challenge cup. Mr Alan Gibson won the points prize in the open class. He has not been defeated in this class for many years. Mr F. Mason, of Feilding, judged the narcissi* while Miss Abraham, Palmerston North, judged the decorative class and cut flowers.

Much interesb was taken in the election of the Hunterville Town Board. There was a record number of votes registered for a Town Board election, 255 being the total. Mr R. K. Simpson at the first time of nomination, topped the poll. All the old members were returned with the exception of Mr Thomas, the voting being as follows:—rMr R. K. Simpson 177, Mr G. B. Gregory 172, Mr R. A. Gordon 159, Mr W. H. Bowick 158, Mr W. O’Brien 141, Mr F. C. Berry 130, Mr W. Whyte 118. Mr Thomas polled 106 votes, Mr A. Millar 104, Mr H. Dillon 89 and Mr E. Simons 56. At a special meeting of the board this morning Mr W. H. Bowick was re-elected chairman. PERSONAL.

Mr Francis McLean who was injured some weeks ago at the Manawatu point-to-point steeplechase at Kiwitea when his mount fell, ‘returned to his home at “Spring Grove,” Marton on Tuesday from a Palmerston North hospital. He has made a wonderful recovery.
