THE SOCCER CODE

LAST MATCH OF SEASON. ATHLETIC BEAT THE REST. Athletic registered another victory at North Street Park, this afternoon, in the last soccer match of the season. A team representative of all the other clubs went under to the tune of three goals to two after a fair exhibition of the code'. The heavy wind prevented good centring but the respective teams gave a good account of themselves. The teams were as follow Athletic (black). —Gear, Askam, A. Crowe, Geekie, Beer, Martin, P. Childs, H. Childs, Hearsev,- llainford, Watt. Tint Rest (blue and white). —J. Crowe (R.S.A.), (captain), Hands (Rangers), Baigent (It.S.A.), J. Smillie (Rangers), Paton (St. Andrew’s), McSheffrey (St. Andrew’s), ' Fordyce (Feilding), Carnell (Rangers), Elliott (Feilding), Smith (Rangers), Lyons (St. Andrew’s). The Rest kicked off with the advan-t tage of the wind, but could make little impression on the Athletic forward line. Lyons and McSheffrey proved valuable assets to the Rest, and A. Crowe supported Gear well for Athletic, who eventually broke clear, Watts and P. Childs travelling the field to trouble J. Crowe. Paton and Hands secured the ball from a melee to beat Hearsey, but Geekie stemmed the rush and crossed to Watts. The wind was undoubtedly troubling both teams who kept the leather well down. It seemed possible that the / Rest would open their scoring . account when Lyons secured to centre accurately. A melee formed, however, the Athletic back line gaining possession. A concerted movement saw the Rest’s goal besieged when P. Childs dribbled the leather up the line to cross to Hearsey who crossed to Watts. A goal seemed imminent when the wind caught a weak attempt to centre. The combined team found difficulty in forcing Athletic back, but'splendid combination eventually did sp. Fine passing combined with sure trapping forced the blacks to retreat. Fordyce secured from a melee to open the scoring by badly beating Gear with a tricky shot, assisted by the wind. The Rest 1, Athletic 0-

Athletic made vei-y little attempt to rally and were early robbed of the ball. Paton and Carnell combined to cross to Fordyce at the goalmouth. Nippy exchanges resulted in Fordyce dribbling the leather past but the goal was disallowed through offside. Askam got the leather away in fine style and the opposing forward lines now played in better stylo. The Rest again assumed the territoria’l advantage, Lyons and Carnell giving Gear no rest. Up and down play occupied a quarter of an hour, Athletic awakening to their responsibilities. Hearsey broke clear on the right arfd just failed to net. Crowe cleai-ed'but the blacks closed in, and Watts combined with Martin to equalise. Athletic 1, The Rest 1.

The following play was fast, but the scores were unchanged when halftime whistle sounded. * Athletic dominated play ffom the commencement, and despite isolated breaks by the combined team they gradually hemmed the opposing backs in. Hearsey gave Athletic the lead with a fine shot shortly after the spell commenced.

Athletic 2, The Rest 1

T. Crowe replaced Beere who retired with an injured knee. Good combination saw the Rest press effectively and they did not let Athletic get possession. Carnell culminated a good movement with a short, hard shot.

Athletic 2, The Rest 2,

Play was now willing, but lack of combination coupled with a troublesome wind spoilt an otherwise splendid exhibition. Time and again the respective goalies were called upon to defend, and neither permitted the leather to pass him. After' twenty minutes of fast but somewhat monotonous play, Athletic definitely assumed the upper hand. Supported by his backs, Hearsey tenaciously invaded the combined team’s territory and was finally rewarded with, an accurate shot at short range. Athletic 3, The Rest 2.. The blacks continued to press and it seemed certain that Hearsey would further increase the lead, but the leather topped the bar. The final minutes yielded bright football, but Athletic retained their lead till the game concluded. ltev. C. S. Matthews refereed. JUNIOR “KNOCK-OUT” CONCLUDES.
