BASKETBALL

FINAL GAME DECIDED. CONVENT O.G. BEAT TECHNICAL. A fast and interesting game of basketball, in which speedy attack was combined with solid defence, was witnessed at the Technical School grounds, Grey Street, this afternoon, when Convent Old Girls and Technical School contested the final of the Robert Cup competition. Particvflar interest attached to the meeting of these two teams, as Convent headed the Wednesday competition with an unbeaten 'record, and Technical School proved the winners of the Saturday matches with only one loss in twelve games. Convent won by the comfortable margin of 11 goals to four. The passing throughout the game was clean and the pace was fast, though a choppy wind affected the shots at goal. Technical’s loss was duo to the fact that the forwards were not good enough and did hot show the speed and anticipation that was evidenced in the work of the centres and defenders. They had plenty of shots at goal, but many of the efforts were badly directed. The Convent team, on the other hand, was well balanced and solid, and fully deserved to win. The forwards had a clear understanding, and their passing and positional play were well carried out.

The teams were as follow: Convent Old Girls.—Forwards: A. Quigan, M. Diedrich, G. Wischnewsky (captain) ; centres, C. Dais, G. Norris, Iv. Lucas; defenders, L. Whitehouse, E. Norris, M. Stoneliouse. Technical.—Forwards: L. Hosking, D. Shaw, N. Blundell; centres, J. Barrie, It. Richards, G. Palenskij, defenders, J. Sheppard (captain), N. Wood, E. Trollope. Convent won the toss and took the choice of ends. The Technical forwards took possession, but several attempts at goal proved fruitless, the defence being sound. The handling of the attackers at this stage was erratic. Convent centres came more forcibly into the picture, and a well sustained movement by the attackers resulted in M. Diedrich goaling. Good combination was again -in evidence a few minutes later, when pretty in-and-out passing resulted in M. Diedrich goaling twice in quick succession. For Technrcal N. Hosking then goaled after several attempts. Play was even and fast rrntil concerted action again gave the advantage to the Convent forwards, and G. Wischnewsky scored from a difficult angle. The half-time score was:— Convent 4, Technical 1. M. Diedrich placed Convent further in the lead immediately on the resumption of play, a quick pass beating the defenders. Convent again pierced the defence, G. Wischnewsky goaling, but Technical attacked strongly, D. Shaw finding the loop, and N. Hosking being successful with a free throw at goal for overguarding. Snappy passing took the ball forward, M. Diedrich and G. Wischnewsky both goaling, the latter with a beautiful long shot. Scoring was fast at this stage, the ball travelling accurately through the forwards’ hands. Technical had several opportunities that went begging, but N. Hosking added a further goal to her tally. Convent increased their lead when the attack swept back and M. Diedrich made no mistake with a free throw. The passing had improved considerably, and some pretty exchanges were s66n. A rapid exchange took the ball again to M. Diedrich who goaled, the manoeuvre being repeated again just on the call of time. The final score was: Convent Old Girls 11, Technical School 4. Miss L. A. Brown was the referee. FEILDING DEFEAT ALL SAINTS. The curtain-raiser was provided by teams from All Saints’ Club and Feilding Agricultural High School, the visitors winning by four goals to three. The teams were: _ .

All Saints’. —Forwards: R. Rising (captain), J. Payne, P. Payne; centres, J. Thomson, M. JVloxin, J. Remington; defenders, Iv. Arlidge, T. Holmes and L. A. Brown. Feilding.—Forwards: V. Whisker, M. Shelton, E. Bailey ; centres, B. Cox-kill, M. Taylor (captain), D. Hunt; defenders, N. Williamson, M. Logan and M. Hills. Play in the first half was fast, but there was a lot of scrambling in the centre. The visiting forwards were impressive, but there were weaknesses in the defence, and All Saints’ had plenty: of opportunities to scoi-e. However, the home forwards did not rise to the occasion, and many cliances went begging. The half-time score was three all, the' scorers for All Saints’ being P Payne and J. Payne (2) and for Feilding M. Shelton (2) and V. Whisker. Neither team settled down in the second spell, the handling continuing to be poor. The choppy wind militated against accurate play. M. Shejton scored the winning goal for Feilding, the final score being: Feilding 4, All Saints’ 3. • - Miss Vautier refereed.

TROPHY PRESENTED. SOCIAL GATHERING. At the conclusion of this afternoon’s games basketball players and supporters gathered at the Broadway Lounge, where a pleasant social hour was spent. . In presenting the Robert Cup to the Convent Old Girls team the Mayor, Mr A. J. Graham, extended congratulations on a successful season. He felt sure that the Wednesday and Saturday competitions had been thoroughlv enjoyed, and lie was assured that there had been a marked improvement < the standard of play. The Convent Old Girls’ Club had enjoyed a successful career. They were the ’first winners of the cup, and though unsuccessful last vear had earned- further laurels this season, having an unbeaten record. Both teams which contested the final were to be congratulated, and lie urged the girls to plav the game for its own ike, and in the interests of comradeship. The president of the Manawatu Basketball Association, Miss Vautier, congratulated the Feilding Agricultural H igh School team on its display against All Saints’, and also the .two teams which had contested tire final. It was apparent, she said, that the standard of play was improving, and it was obvious that, in a large measure, this improvement could be .traced to tournament play. The exhibition given was undoubtedly of greater merit than hist year’s final, and she hoped that the standard would continue to advance. Miss L. A. Brown also spokfe briefly, referring to the noticeable improvement of the standard of plav. . . Cheers were given for the winning and losing teams, and for the president.

TROPHY FOR BASKETBALL. DONATION BY MAYOR. The Mayor, announced his intention of 'donating a cup to the Manawatu Basketball Association for competition, when' speaking at a social gathering of players and supporters of the game

this afternoon. It was pointed out that the association had Wednesday • and Saturday competitions, the winners of each playing off for the Robert Cup. Mr Graham, expressed the hope that by having a cup for each section interest and enthusiasm would bo further sustained.
