"BANK ROBBERY
ARMED BANDITS AT WORK. VICTORIAN SENSATION. ARRESTS EFFECTED. MELBOURNE, Sept. 19. At the Brunswick branch of the Bank of New South Wales to-day, armed men held up to officers, one of whom was hit on the head with a piece of iron. W. Brooks, bank teller, fired shots at the bandits, who escaped in a taxi with £3OO. - The hold-up occurred while the manager was away at luncheon. The robbers ordered Messrs Brooks and Martin to put up their hands, and then struck the latter on the head with a piece of piping, felling him. The money was gathered up by the robbera, who rushed away. They were followed by Mr Brooks, who fired several shots, one of which shattered the windscreen of the taxi, the driver of which ’ apparently was not aware of the character of his passengers. The driver was bundled off lus seat to the road and his car driven away by one of the thieves. ; The car was abandoned in a side street and £IOO in notes was found on the seat. Mr Martin had to have several stitches put in his head wound. A later message says that, in connection with the hold-up, a man has been charged with robbery under arms, a man and woman have been charged with vagrancy, and another woman with receiving. ».
