PROPELLER LOST
MISHAP TO TAHITI. VESSEL BREAKS DOWN. STEAMERS RACING TO ASSISTANCE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. Radio advice was received by the Union Company this morning that the Royal Mail steamer Tahiti, which left Wellington on Tuesday afternoon for San Francisco, lost her propeller, at 4 a.m. to-day, when about 460 miles from Raratonga. She has apparently broken down, and the company’s islands steamer Tofua, which left Suva yesterday, for Nukualofa, and the steamer Ventura, en route from Sydney to San Francisco, are proceeding to her assistance. The Tahiti has 128 passengers on board.' UNCONFIRMED REPORT. PASSENGERS - TAKE TO LIFEBOATS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 16. A radio message was picked up at Auckland at 5 a.m. to-day, to the effect that the steamer Tahiti had lost her propeller and was making water fast. The position was given at from 200 to 400 miles off Raratonga. A later report, which has not been confirmed, stated that the passengers had taken to the lifeboats.
