ALARMING SPREAD

LAWLESSNESS IN SIND. INADEQUACY OF POLICE FORCE. AFRIDIS CLOSE TO PESHAWAR. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright.) Received August 14, 10.35 a.m. DELHI, Aug. 13. The Government of Bonibay is alleged to have received urgent telegrams from Sind regarding the alarming spread of the spirit of extreme lawlessness which is beginning at Sukkur and extending outwards. The root of the evil in Sind is the utter ..inadequacy of the police force, against which the Sind authorities have continually protested to Bombay. Huge gangs prowl around Sind, taking the fullest advantage of the communal disturbances. RAIDERS REPULSED. A gang of Afridis daringly penetrated close to Peshawar yesterday and sniped for two hours at Dean’s Hotel, the Staff Headquarters, and European residences. Indian troops gallantly resisted an attempt by the raiders to rush a huge military store containing a thousand tins of petrol, driving the Afridis back. The Afridis suffered many casualties. Aeroplanes, with artillery and cavalry co-operating, dispersed the Afridis from hiding places round Peshawar, but not before they had wrecked the railway line and cut the telegraph wires.
