STRATFORD, Aug. 14. ' Taranaki defeated North Auckland in a Rugby match at Stratford yesterday by 24 points to nine in a rather poor game. Speculative kicking was rife and the tackling was not all that it should have been in representative football. The backs simply'could not get going. Scrappy play .marked the opening stages, and things were dull with the North Auckland breakaways swamping all attempts at back movements. When the packs warmed up to work brighter football was witnessed, but the first spell was a direct cause for the boredoom of the crowd. The second appearance of the teams was more inspiring and the last 20 minutes’ play was good enough. Taranaki’s success was due to the good defence and speed of the backs, though the visitors were superior in the forwards.
