Miss N. D. Hoekings, of Feilding, is visiting Auckland. Miss Adeline Hare lias returned to her home in Feilding from an extended holiday in the north. Miss Ailsa Ross, of Palmerston North, was a debutante at the Wanganui College Old Girls’'ball. Mrs Oliver Waymouth, of Christchurch, is visiting her mother, 'Mrs F. G. Woollam?, Feilding. Mrs E. Lcete, of Ngaio, Wellington, is staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. H. Maguire, Feilding. Miss S. Macdonald lias returned to Palmerston North after spending a holiday in Auckland. Miss Madeline Cockayne has returned to Wellington from a holiday in Palmerston North. Mrs T. Jefferies, of Stanway, and her sister, Miss Amy Craine, of Hawera, are visiting Palmerston North. Mrs F. Moresby, of Palmerston North, is the guest of Mrs J. C. Chris-' tie, Ngaruawakia. Dr. Pauline Witherow, formerly of Palmerston North, is at present acting as relieving doctor at the Hampstead Hospital, London. Mrs J. Sylvester, Halswell, Canterbury, has left for Palmerston North, accompanying her daughter, Mrs F. A. Wilson, who has been spending some weeks with her mother. Mr and Mrs lan McQ-ruer, of Feildihg, journeyed to Invercargill to attend the wedding of the latter’s sister and are at present visiting Christchurch. They are expected to return to their home at the end of this week. Miss M. E. Magill, of the Thorndon Normal School, has been appointed to represent the New Zealand Federation of Teachers at the meeting of the Federated State School Teachers’ Association of Australia, at Adelaide, in January, 1931. Mr H. W. Broad, Mr and Mrs Alec Matheson, Miss 0. Innes, Mrs Geoffrey Potts and Mr B. E. Keiller, all of Palmerston North, were recent callers at New Zealand House, London. Miss A. Crawford, of Palmerston North, voluntary organiser for the provincial federation of women’s institutes, leaves to-day to organise work in the Wairarapa.

A very pleasant afternoon was spent by members of the Manawatu Croquet Club and their friends yesterday, when flag bridge was played. There was a large attendance, fifteen rounds being played. The winners were Mesdames Fuller, Campbell and Benfell. After, noon tea was provided, the hostesses being Mesdames G. W. Corbridge, Hampton, Stevenson and Glendinning. The last of the winter socials will be held on September 9. An engagement of New Zealand interest is announced between Major Eric Francis Wallace Mackenzie, 0.8. E., M.C., ltoyal Army Medical Corps, elder son of Dr. and Mrs F. W. Mackenzie, of Wellington, and Violet May, elder daughter of Colonel R. B. Ainsworth, D.b.0., 0.8. E., K.H.P., and Mrs Ainsworth, of Monteagle House, Twickenham Park, Middlesex, states a London correspondent.

The death occurred at Birkenhead, Auckland, this week of Mrs Emmaetta Watts Blomfield, widow of the late Mr Samuel Blomfield, aged 90 y.ears. Mrs Blomfield was born in Leicester. She was married in London in 1858, and came to New Zealand with her husband in the ship Gertrude m 1863.

Mrs Maria Wriglit, whose death occurred at Nelson on Saturday morning in her 93rd year, was the last surviving member of the Cawthron family. She was a daughter of Mr Thomas Cawthron, who with his family arrived in Nelson from England in the early ’4o’s. She was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters. The eldest brother, J antes, met his death in a drowning accident when he was in the shipping trade. One of the brothers, Mr Thomas Cawthron, was the founder of the famous Cawthron Institute.
