NATIONAL DEFENCE LEAGUE.
MANAWATU BRANCH. A meeting of the committee of the Manawatu branch of the National Defence League of N.Z. was held on Tuesday evening for the purpose of thking preliminary steps to further the development of the movement in this centre. Those present were Major Hume, who presided, Messrs J. McLeod, K. G. Chamberlain, Mesdames W. L. Fitzlierbert and S. V. Trask. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Davis, Major Hardie and Messrs W. Caccia Birch, W. L. Fitzherbert and R. B. Lucas. It was reported that a definite measure of interest and support was being shown by the public in the objects of the league and that .a considerable number of members had .already been enrolled. A resolution was passed that application be made to the General Council for the Manawatu branch to be’raised to the status of a district council to enable a more comprehensive and effective scheme of organisations to be carried out. It was also decided to strengthen the committee by inviting further nominations for office.
