RONGOTEA
FARMING OPERATIONS. (From Our Own Correspondent). RONGOTEA, Aug. 12. During the months of June and July the weather was exceedingly dry and cold. In fact, those relying on tanks for household water supplies were placed in a serious position and many had to resort to visiting the Oroua River to replenish their stock of the necessary liquid. Farming operations have been carried on and much ploughing and cultivation have taken place during the whole of the dry period, which has bfeen an unusual procedure in the Rongotea district during the winter months. The farms surrounding Rongotea are looking particularly well at the present time and since the recent beneficial rains the growth of pasture has been remarkable. Given fine, warm weather, a properous season can be expected as the herds of cows have wintered well and very few low conditioned animals are in evidence. Supplies of cream at the local factory are increasing rapidly, this being reflected in the price of store pigs for which there is a keen demand to cope with the increased supply of skim and whey milk. Lorries are now daily transporting calves to the various freezing works. Those engaged in the business are deserving of commendation for the efforts they take to cause as little, suffering as possible to the animals. It may interest manv to know that the present method of disposing of the poor “unwanted” calves is a vast improvement on the older method. CARD TOURNAMENT. A challenge, game between the Rongotea and Kopane Social Clubs was held in the Kopane schoolroom on Monday evening, and all present spent a most enjoyable time. After all the games had been completed Kopane were victorious by the narrow margin of five points, Kopane gaining 52-games, while Rongotea totalled 47. The winners for Kopane were: Mr Dyer and Mrs Divehall, the consolation prizes being won by Mr Morris and Mrs Morris. The Rongotea prize winners wore Mr Fraser and Miss Fearson and the consolation prize winners Mrs Buchanan and Mr G. Liggins. A return match is to be played on Monday night, when the Kopane team will be the guests of the Rongotea Club. FOOTBALL. At a meeting of the Rongotea Football Club held in the Coronation Hall on Tuesday evening it was decided to hold the annual ball at the end of the month, a professional orchestra has been arranged for, and the supper arrangements are to be left in the hands of a strong ladies’ committee. The cups and medals won during the season will be presented.
