He stated that it was desired that work on the new bridge be commenced immediately in view of the fact that the present bridge was in danger of collapse, and suggested that a deputation consisting of the chairman of the County Council, together with the Mayor and Hon. E. A. Raiisom, Minister of Lands and member for the district, should wait on the Minister of Fublic Works and the chairman of the Main Highways Board concerning the mutter. The Mayor stated that after the careful survey of the present bridge made by the county’s engineers he was of the opinion that it would bo a waste of money to repair it.—lt was decided that the Mayor bo appointed to represent the Borough Council on the deputation. An opinion was expressed that a load restriction should be placed on the bridge, but the Mayor pointed out that the bridge was under the control of the County Council. The Walrarapa Frogress League wrote suggesting that, owing to the long distance members were asked to travel, a district committee should be formed. Opinion was divided as to whether the council . should associate itself with the league and it was eventually decided that the Mayor and president of the Chamber of Commerce be authorised to coll a public meeting, and that the secretary of the league be invited to address it. Repairs to the municipal buildings were authorised. A grant of £lO was made to. the Fahiatua branch of the Flunkct Society. Accounts totalling £2426 Is 6d were passed for payment. Referring to the town water supply, the Mayor stated that he had interviewed Mr 'loogood, civil engineer, in Wellington and the latter would like to meet the council and see .if a modified scheme would meet with its approval. The Mayor pointed out that something would have to be done, as up to the middle of last month, there had been a shortage of water on several occasions. Once the reservoir had been empty. It was decided to have a further interview with the consulting engineer.
Last evening a four-roomed cottage at Mangamutu was totally destroyed by fire. The dwelling, which was occupied by Mr F. Lawry, was owned by Mr D. O’Brien. While Mr Lawry was absent for about 16 minutes, putting a horse in a paddock the building evidently caught alight, as when ho returned the house was completely in flames, it being impossible to save anything. The cottage was insured for £SO, but Mr O’Brien estimates his loss at at least £l5O.
