PAHIATUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent). 1 , PAHIATUA, Aug. 13. There was a large and representative gathering of business men of Pahiatua and districts at a meeting held last evening by the Chamber of Commerce to hear an address given by Mr A. McNeil, business agent for the New Zealand Railways in this district. Mr Peter Tulloch, president of the Chamber, presided and expressed pleasure at the number present. Mr McNeil was gratified with the opportunity of addressing the gathering and proceeded to explain - tho new rates for the conveyance of goods on the, railways. He also outlined other concessions to be made by tho Railways Department and trusted that the business people would support their own concern, the railways. At the conclusion of the address Mr McNeil answered several questions p_ut to him by those present. On the motion of Mr A. A. Vaughan seconded by Mr L. T. Herbert. it was decided to piacc on record the business people’s appreciation of the action of the railway department in reducing the tarff. A hearty voto of thanks was parsed to the lecturer for his interesting and instructive address.

Mr Edge presided oyer a meeting of the Bush Hockey Union executive last ovening when there was a fair attendance. One of tho players in the recent Woodvillo-Nireaha match was severely cautioned for rough play. Mr R. Payne presented a report of tho recent hockey conference, which ho attended with Mr R. Cavanagh. It was decided to hold the annual ball, early in September at Hamua and tentative arrangements were mado for tho event.

Miss Marjorie Taylor, daughter of Mr and Mrs IV. R. Taylor, of Kohinui, loft to-day for 15 months' training at the Kafitane Home, Wellington. Mrs C. Morcom, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs C. D. M. Day, of Pahiatua.
