IN SYDNEY HARBOUR.
WHALE PAYS A VISIT. SPOUTS FOR BRIDGE BUILDERS. SYDNEY, Aug. 12. An unusual, and in some respects an unwelcome, visitor in Sydney harbour to-day was a humpback whale. The whale careered from one side to the other, and even disported itself under tho new bridge, where it spouted water to the great delight of the bridgebuilders. Half a dozen speed launches followed it, and unsuccessful attempts were made bv fishermen to harpoon it, and also to shoot it. One launcji got so close to the monster —it was 43ft in length —that the boat was damaged and the occupants thrown off their feet. Zoological officsials on the harbour front were greatly interested in the pursuit. Eventually, after two hours’ excitement, the whale disappeared. Ferry travellers then lost their nervousness.
