BOXING.
BOUT AT GREYMOUTH. Per Press Association. GREYMOUTH, July 20. A professional boxing contest between “Tiger” Palmer, of Melbourne (list. 131b5.) and Alf. Cleverley, of Wellington (12st. 2ilbs.) last night was won by Palmer. The bout proved interesting. The Australian’s aggression brought an end in the tenth round, in which Cleverley was twice down for the count of nine. When he went down a third time the referee (Mr Frank O’Neill) awarded Palmer the verdict. Cleverley started well, but after the second round Palmer took the fight to the other repeatedly, rushing his opponent to the ropes, and using nice left rips effectively, but missing occasionally with right uppercuts. The winner was the superior in-fighter, and won most of the rounds. Interest in boxing locally is reawakening after a period closely approaching apathy and amateurs will be pleased to learn that B. O’Keefe, the well-known lightweight, is linking up with S. Havill in conducting the Rangitikei Street gymnasium. Last season Sir Havill’s gymnasium was very active and quite a number of tourneys were conducted, wherein a wealth of talent was disclosed. Unfortunately, the N.Z. Boxing Council did not view proceedings favourably, but the deadlock has now been overcome and the club will once again operate. Tuesday night has been set down for the reopening of the gymnasium.
