SLUGGISH RIVER DRAINAGE BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) BAINESSE, May 20. At the school on Monday evening a large and representative gathering of ratepayers in the Sluggish River Board s Bainesso area met to consider alterations to certain drains in the district. During the last two or three years the water has been a severe menace to those farmers in low-lying positions. The members of the board who were present were Messrs Foster (chairman), M. J. Ryan, R. Coulter, R. Print. Mr Foster explained to the meeting tho proposed alterations and their various estimates for the same. He also explained tho falls of the drains in the Bainesse areas. He stated that the board was there to do their best for the ratepayers with the finance available. The estimates mentioned included alterations to certain drains that did not seriously affect the ratepayers. . . Mr F. J. Legg contended that, if it was possible to relieve the farms which were affected by water, without a loan, then it should bo done. He proposed that certain high places bo lowered and that the drain bo widened to four feet and any blocks or bends be removed. Mr Dixon explained to the meeting that if the drain was widened to four feet the silt from the drain would seriously affect farms in his district. Mr Metcalfe then moved that the Windmill Drain from Pyke’s Road to Bainesso Road be made three feet wide where necessary and any blocks or bends affecting the run of the water be removed. This was seconded by Mr Robertson and when put to tho meeting, was carried unanimously. Regarding finances, Mr Metcalfe moved that it be left to the board’s discretion. The board was instructed to commence alterations as soon as possible as tho weather at this time of the year is likely to break up at any time. The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Foster for tho information he had given to those ratepayers affected.
